Theme Options

For my theme my first choice would be Family. In my memoir I would write about growing up in a small town & my life now as I live with my boyfriend of 7 years & our 2 dogs. For my ethnography I was thinking since I don’t have children of my own that I would observe a day in the life of a working mom…my older sister Julie. Would be interesting to see how she juggles work, a husband, & three young boys. In my argumentative essay I was going to write about the unfortunate loss my family suffered when we lost my Aunt Laureen to breast cancer and how some may argue that homeopathic medicine instead of traditional medicine is better in treating cancer patients. Finally in my research/photo essay I would have a collage of family photos throughout the years & talk about my family as a whole unit.

For my second choice I was thinking of doing sports, more specifically Red Sox Nation. For my memoir I will talk about growing up as a Red Sox fan & the heartache it caused.  For my ethnography I was going to observe how prevalent Red Sox Nation is in Florida because that’s where their Spring Training camp is. There are many different topics I could chose from as my argumentative essay surrounding sports, for example, salaries, steroid use, or the introduction of instant replays. For  my research essay I could create a collage of the Red Sox through the years & talk about all their trials and tribulations.

As you can see I cannot decide between the two so any feedback is more than welcomed. Thank You…………

Mel a writer?

Let’s be honest……I am not a writer at all. I guess when I was in High School I wrote a few good papers but I graduated in 1996 so that was a long time ago. Although I do not consider myself a writer I am looking forward to learning new ways on expressing yourself through writing. I am normally a very internal person so it will be interesting to see how writing can help me come out of my shell……maybe.

As for me as a person I have made the decision to go back to school after almost 20 years of working in jobs that just didn’t make me happy. Happiness is MOST important to me as I unfortunately have seen too many people just going through the motion of life & not ever enjoying it. No amount of money is more important to me than happiness. So now I am fortunate enough to be able to get a fresh start at the age of 36 & find my Happiness.

I am very lucky to have two wonderful & very supportive parents who are making this transition possible for me. I worked for Verizon for over 10 years & when they offered an early retirement package a week before my 30th birthday my parents said “Take it!” They knew I was unhappy everyday I had to go to work & were more than supportive with my decision to leave. About a month after I made that decision my Great-Aunt passed away leaving my Great-Uncle Ken heartbroken & very lonely. I then made the decision, along with my parents support,to take care of my Uncle Ken everyday. Unfortunately it recently became too much to care for a 94 year old by myself & we made the decision that he needed to be in a nursing home where he will get all the care he needs. Which then made me take a look in the mirror & decide what I wanted to do now. School was my answer. So now here I am a 36 year old Freshman in college. Although it is very scary being back after so long I am happy & that’s important.

I guess in conclusion I am definitely not a writer, as I probably just proved, but I am here to learn & may even surprise myself. I look forward to this journey of College Writing.
